The water Resources Service is part of the Direction of Studies in the Litani River Authority (LRA).
The functions of this service are:
- the gauging of all important rivers and springs in Lebanon,
- the study of underground water resources in the south Lebanon and the South Bekaa.
The Service commands a brigade of technicians whose duty is the gauging of the lebanese rivers.
This brigade is distributed in four regional offices each of which gauges the rivers of a "Mohafazat":
-Beirut ( "Mount Lebanon"),
-Tripoli ( North Lebanon),
-Chtaura (Bekaa),
-Sidon (South Lebanon).
In the sixties, the lebanese hydrometric network had an excellent extension.
During the civil war, the equipments of the Water Resources Service suffered very much: 75 % of the field equipments were destroyed, and gauging measurements were much reduced.
Since 1990, the Service has recovered gradually its activities (restoration of the stations, acquisition of new flow-meters and of a spectrofluorimeter (for high flows measurements): presently, the lebanese hydrometric network includes 41 stations, 35 of which are equiped with a limnigraph, covering thus the whole country in a rather satisfactory way. Unfortunately, the qualified technical staff belonging to this Service decreases year by year due to departure to retirement, and is not sufficiently replaced.
